Capturing History: The Grand Opening of Forest Park’s Basketball Courts

When I found out about the possibility of basketball courts in Forest Park, I was ecstatic. My husband and I had long felt like they were notably missing from this incredible park, and we were excited about the community that would develop around them. As a photographer, I have the privilege of capturing images for Forest Park Forever frequently throughout the year, but one of my favorite assignments last year was documenting the grand opening of the basketball courts.

A Milestone for the Community

The addition of basketball courts to Forest Park was more than just a new recreational space—it was a momentous occasion for the St. Louis community. These courts provide a gathering place for diverse families, athletes, and friends to enjoy the game and build connections. On the day of the grand opening, the excitement was palpable, with people of all ages coming together to celebrate

The Power of Photography in Community Storytelling

Events like these remind me why I love what I do. Photography isn’t just about taking pictures—it’s about preserving moments that matter. These images help tell the story of progress, community, and legacy, ensuring that future generations can look back on this milestone with pride.

Honoring the Legacy of Nicholas J. Booker

A particularly meaningful aspect of the event was the dedication of the courts as the Nicholas J. Booker Basketball Courts. Named in honor of Nicholas J. Booker, these courts serve as a tribute to his passion for basketball and his impact on the St. Louis community. His legacy continues through this space, providing opportunities for young athletes to play, grow, and connect with one another. Nicholas’ sister had the honor of taking the inaugural shot and his brother and former teammates played in the inaugural game.

If you haven’t made it to the courts yet, spring is coming! There is always a pick up game to join.
